In July 2017, the BOCHK Charitable Foundation organised an activity for one hundred CDF participants and mentors to watch together the great performance of the International Military Tattoo, which provided them with the opportunity to appreciate the styles and characteristics of military band music from different parts of the world.
The International Military Tattoo was one of the events celebrating the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. Apart from the Hong Kong Police Band and the Hong Kong Association of Choral Societies, a total of nine renowned military bands from the Mainland and overseas, which included the Military Band of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, the Guard of Honour of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, the US 7th Fleet Band and the Band of the Royal Regiment of Scotland with the Pipes and Drums of the 7th Battalion, were also invited to perform in the event. All the audience were thrilled by the spectacular musical performances of the military tattoo.
CDF participants who attended the International Military Tattoo came from five NGO operators and schools, namely the Christian Action, the New Home Association, San Wui Commercial Society Secondary School, Shatin Baptist Church and the Boys’ Brigade, Hong Kong.

I was most impressed by the remarkable and unique performance of the Band of the Royal Netherlands Army Mounted Regiments with its members playing the instruments while riding bicycles.” |

Participant of New Home Association’s "May your dreams come true" project (Tai Po and North District) “A number of military bands from afar were invited to perform in the International Military Tattoo. Members of the bands marched in step, demonstrating a high level of skills and techniques. I believe they must have spent much time and efforts on the foot drill. It was impressive to see that each military band demonstrated its distinctive style and character and among all the performing bands, the Guard of Honour of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) is the one having the most of my admiration. It was said that the Women’s Battalion of the Guard of Honour of the PLA was just formed in 2014 and this was the first time for the Women’s Battalion to perform in Hong Kong. Towards the end of its performance, members of the Guard of Honour of the PLA even thrilled the audience by getting into formation modelling on the five-star emblem, and instantly the atmosphere at the Arena was pushed to a climax!” |

During their performance, they marched in various patterns, including star and heart shapes as well as the English abbreviation of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, etc. Each military band had its own characteristic and their superb performance is still fresh in my mind.” MAK Man-kit (middle) Participant of Shatin Baptist Church’s "Companions for Tomorrow" project (Shatin) “It was the first time for my mother, sister, mentor and me to watch the performance of military bands together. We queued up to get into the Hong Kong Coliseum excitedly, looking forward to attending this spectacular international event. Each band had its own style of playing the music to showcase pride and glory, winning cheers and applause from the audience. I still feel excited when I recall the scene now.” |

From the moment when I entered the Hong Kong Coliseum to the time when I was seated at the Arena and watched the tattoo together with an audience of almost 10,000, it was entirely a very new experience to me. Among all the performances, I like the one given by the Hong Kong Police Band most because the familiar sound of the music played by them had struck a responsive chord in me.” |
