Chroma-Keying & Green Screens

6.4.2018

In the superman, disaster and science-fiction movies which we often see today, many imagined scenarios go far beyond the actual shooting area. Do you know how such scenes are produced?

The Department of Communication Design and Digital Media under the Hong Kong Design Institute arranged an induction course on “Chroma-Keying & Green Screens” for CDF participants in order to enhance their understanding of digital media production. CDF participants even had the opportunity to try out the shooting in class by first taking a shot in front of a green-screen background and afterwards removing the colour background with the help of computer technique. A further combination with a new image or scenery will give rise to a new scene for the movie.

What they say…

What they say
Leung Dik-wun
Aged 15
Baptist Oi Kwan Social Service

Dik-wun is studying visual arts and also has great interest in the multimedia industries but it was a pity that she had all along no opportunity to get in touch with these industries. She has been attracted by some music videos with different filming styles on the social media, and hoped that she could take part in music video production one day and have a masterpiece of her own. Therefore, she felt so happy that she could experience “green-screen shooting” this time.

“Just now the tutor mentioned that creative media was a means to share your story with others. I absolutely agreed. I would also describe this industry with the word ‘infinity’ because it is exactly like a piece of white paper with infinite realms for people to give play to their imaginative power and creativity.”
