A classical music tour around the world

The Hong Kong Music Academy (HKMA) has all along given staunch support to the Child Development Fund (CDF). Every year HKMA arranges for CDF participants a wide range of music activities organised by the HKMA orchestra. In January and May 2017, around 600 CDF participants, their mentors and families enjoyed an exotic tour around the world in 90 minutes through two classical music concerts presented by HKMA on the theme of “Around the World”. By listening attentively to well-known pieces of music from places world-wide, they could also have a taste of the music cultures in different countries.

CDF participants who attended the concerts came from 16 NGO operators and schools, namely Baptist Wing Lung Secondary School, Caritas–Hong Kong, Christian Action, Hong Kong Lutheran Social Service, Methodist Epworth Village Community Centre, Social Welfare, Neighbourhood & Worker's Education Centre, New Home Association, San Wui Commercial Society Secondary School, Shatin Baptist Church, C.C.C. Heep Woh Primary School (Cheung Sha Wan), the Industrial Evangelistic Fellowship, the Methodist Church HK Wesley College, Tung Wah Group of Hospitals, Yan Chai Hospital, Yan Kwong Social Service and Yan Oi Tong.

After attending the concerts, the participants had different feelings about this special experience. While applauding the superb performance of the orchestra, those participants who are learning musical instruments also looked up to the performers in the orchestra as their role models. They encouraged themselves to work very hard learning music, hoping that they could perform onstage one day.

I was so happy to have such an opportunity to attend this concert! The melodious musical masterpieces from all over the world were so sweet and pleasing to the ears and “It's A Small World” was the one I like most. This activity has aroused my strong interest in music. I will continue to work hard, hoping that I can perform onstage one day.

The concert started with the playing of Symphony No.8 "Unfinished" led by the famous conductor, Mr Ray Tsoi. This beautiful piece of music was immediately followed by the playing of well-known pieces from different countries, enabling us to travel over the world in 90 minutes. I could feel the tacit understanding and the professional music exchange among members of the orchestra. This wonderful experience has indeed enlightened me and opened my eyes.

The concert was marvellous. Mr Ray Tsoi, the conductor of the orchestra, provided the audience with a very humorous and interesting description. The atmosphere was joyful, and we were fully enchanted by the remarkable performance. The most impressive part was the singing performed by the Tuen Mun Children Choir, during which a group of lovely children singing heartily and charming us with their sweet voice. It was also fascinating to note that many members of the orchestra were only small children but they were able to give musical performances of such a high standard.

I am a violinist myself. As I have played in a philharmonic orchestra, this concert has aroused special feelings in me. Members of the orchestra coming from different age groups gave full play to their talents in their own positions. It was also admirable to see that the interaction between the conductor and the audience had made the whole concert a very enjoyable one without any dull moment throughout the 90 minutes.
